The Price of a Wish: Trevi Fountain Ends Era of Free Access
For decades, travelers have flocked to Rome with a single goal: to toss a coin over their shoulder into the Trevi Fountain and ensure their return to the Eternal City. From next month, that tradition will come with a price tag.
In a bid to preserve the magic of the monument against the crushing weight of daily crowds, Rome is introducing a ticketing system. Beginning February 1, visitors must book a slot and pay €2 to enter the walkway immediately surrounding the fountain.
City officials hope the move will transform the visitor experience from a chaotic shuffle into a more serene encounter with history. While the fee is nominal, it signals a major shift in how Europe’s most popular destinations manage the balance between welcoming the world and protecting their treasures. Travelers should plan ahead—reservations are expected to fill up fast.
